Condition:
Epilepsy
As Epilepsy is a heterogeneous neurological disorder characterised by recurrent seizures arising from abnormal, associated with excessive electrical activity in the brain. Also its expression varies widely in severity and frequency, and in some individuals it can significantly affect quality of life.
PERSONAL VIEW; Over more than thirty years of clinical practice I have occasionally observed that manual therapy may help some individuals appear to delay or “stall” seizure onset, although the person clearly remains epileptic. For this reason, the role of manual therapy in epilepsy management must be considered supportive rather than curative, and outcomes are often variable.
One consistent observation is that many seizure sufferers appear to regain equilibrium more effectively when deep relaxation and restorative sleep are achieved.
For this reason, I sometimes offer what I refer to as “dive reflex” pads, intended to stimulate physiological responses associated with the mammalian dive reflex, which is known to enhance parasympathetic activity and systemic relaxation. In some individuals this appears to produce a calming effect that supports rest and recovery following periods of neurological instability.
This approach is not proposed as a treatment or cure for epilepsy, but rather as a possible adjunctive management strategy, allowing some individuals to settle more quickly and return to a subjective sense of normality. The concept remains exploratory and would require careful scientific investigation to determine its physiological basis and clinical value. However returning the body to a more relaxed state instantly can be very supportive.
